Raising Grateful Kids

Gratitude is a core value that is built through the mirror image of the giver. Children admire the adults in their lives and follow true to what is shared with them. Robert Emmons defines gratitude, “a sense of thankfulness and joy in response to receiving a gift, whether the gift be a tangible benefit from a specific other or a moment of peaceful bliss evoked by natural beauty”. Gratitude brings positive energy which builds our relationship muscles and the ripple effect is like a stone thrown into the water. The moment goes on and on and on through a kind word, smile, a gentle hug, high five or just a pat on the shoulder. This experience builds trust with others. Gratitude has the power to turn a stranger into a friend.

Life can be demanding and finding the key to a grateful heart for yourself is a first priority. If you choose to be grateful your children will mirror this back. Making gratitude a priority is to first choose. “Most of us spend too much time on what is urgent and not enough time on what is important.” Steven Covey, Author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Believing raising a grateful child is worth it, acknowledge what you need to do, commit to your goal and sit back and receive the benefits. Go for it! Your child and the next generation is counting on you. Take the first step and you will never look back.
